The Blanket Industry: Cooperation for Mutual Benefit is Better Than Low-Price Competition

When it comes to blankets, every household has one or two. Blankets, as daily necessities and wedding gifts, are increasingly favored by consumers. After the revolutionary change of "replacing acrylic with polyester" in the blanket industry, the production cost of blankets has decreased, and the price has also decreased accordingly, making blankets more accessible to ordinary people. However, at the same time, many companies in the industry have engaged in price wars, intensifying vicious competition and seriously affecting the healthy development of the industry.
On July 16, the 2010 National Blanket Industry Development Exchange Conference and the First Session of the Second Meeting of the Blanket Professional Committee, held in Lianyungang, conducted a specific analysis of the situation facing the blanket industry and pointed out the direction for development. The conference attracted nearly 300 enterprise representatives.
Significant Increase in Output
Before the 1980s, blankets, as traditional textiles, were mainly wool blankets, acrylic blankets, and viscose blankets. After more than 30 years of development, the production capacity and output of the blanket industry have increased significantly. Peng Yanli, chairman of the China Wool Textile Industry Association, used figures to introduce the changes in the development of the blanket industry. Twenty years ago, the national blanket output was only 22.96 million, but by 2009, it had exceeded 400 million. Summarizing the reasons, Peng Yanli believes that: firstly, the introduction of Raschel blanket production lines has broadened the product structure range of the blanket industry. Secondly, China's accession to the WTO has brought good development opportunities for blankets to enter the international market. Thirdly, the cancellation of China's blanket quota restrictions has greatly promoted exports and played a huge role in expanding international market share. According to statistics, from January to May this year, blanket exports reached 137 million.
The continuous decline in raw material costs has also promoted the rapid development of the blanket industry. The change in raw material structure from "replacing acrylic with polyester" has further enhanced product competitiveness. Zheng Junlin, secretary-general of the China Chemical Fiber Industry Association, analyzed the operation of the chemical fiber polyester industry in the first half of the year. From January to May this year, the output of chemical fiber polyester filament reached 6.2357 million tons, an increase of 15.94% year-on-year. The rapid development of the chemical fiber polyester industry has brought great confidence to the attendees, and the price of raw materials for blanket production will decrease, and the production cost will also decrease accordingly.
Improving Competitiveness is the Unchanging Path
This year is the year of the Eleventh Five-Year Plan and a key year for implementing the three-year textile industry adjustment and revitalization plan. Adjusting the industrial structure and promoting industrial upgrading are important tasks facing the textile industry, and the blanket industry also faces this task. Peng Yanli said that for many years, due to relatively large market demand, the blanket industry has basically followed a development path mainly based on capacity expansion. In the future, enterprises need to rely on industry self-discipline to promote the overall development of the industry.
Yang Donghui, vice president of the China Textile Industry Association, also analyzed the current severe domestic and international economic situation from the operation of the entire textile industry and suggested that enterprises should treat it with optimism and caution.
Adjusting the structure and improving the contribution rate of science and technology and brand are becoming increasingly important for enterprise development. Peng Yanli said that the future development path of blanket enterprises must aim at improving core competitiveness and increasing the development of new raw materials. Currently, consumers have put forward requirements for blanket products that must be both environmentally friendly and healthy. In order to cope with ever-changing market demands, blanket enterprises should vigorously develop new varieties that adapt to the market, improve product technology content, strengthen brand building, and increase product added value. Only by promoting the coordinated development of the entire blanket industry chain can the competitiveness of the industry be improved, and the healthy and stable development of the industry can be ensured.
With the introduction of warp-knitted Raschel blanket production lines into China, China's blanket industry has experienced rapid development. Raschel blankets are favored by consumers for their bright colors, good feel, and crisp appearance. Blanket companies are also vigorously expanding the variety range of Raschel blankets in the hope of making new breakthroughs. Professor Chen Nanliang of Donghua University Research Institute believes that Raschel blankets, after more than 20 years of development, still have great development space in the application of new raw materials, process technology and weaving equipment, and wool dyeing and finishing technology. The use of natural fibers, ultra-fine fibers, new cellulose fibers, special functional fibers, blended yarns, and fancy yarns as new raw materials will become a new development trend for warp-knitted Raschel blankets. In terms of weaving technology and equipment, new equipment will further improve the adaptability to various raw materials, yarn counts, specifications, and the production capacity of various finished products, and significantly increase the machine operating speed.
